I read that they had been around in Japan for quite a while before coming to the U.S. That being said, I had a Nissan Murano the first year they came out and it had a CVT. I’m no mechanic but have heard many of the same complaints. That's a pretty substantial increase, even if the numbers aren't absolute. My gas mileage (computer indicated) was only about 27 at highway speeds when I bought it, and it's increased to about 34 now.

I now have about 48,000 miles on it, and I suppose I must have it totally broken in now. Overall, it's just a great, tough little car. I still think I'd rather have a normal 6 (or so) speed auto. It burns no oil between 6,000 mile changes, and I've had no trouble with the CVT (there is some sort of extended warranty because of problems though, as I recall). I've had zero trouble with my Forester, other than replacing the battery. A friend has a Honda CRV and it seems to be quieter and smoother operating, and peppier, but that could just be a case of the grass being greener on the other side. It does some rather bizarre revving when trying to accelerate, but at highway speeds is fine. It's slow "off the line" but is actually pretty peppy once you get up a little speed. I have a 2015 Forester 2.5i Touring and the CVT definitely takes some getting used to. Subaru extended the warranty to ten yrs and 100k because of all the complaints. Perhaps one day it will be more reliable. It scared me enough to take the idea completely out of the running. All you have to do is go to places like consumer affairs, edmunds, carcomplaints and read the reviews and remarks. I have never driven a CVT but I still will never consider one. Wouldn't that mean that a CVT vehicle be a good choice? I'm trying to educate myself on them before I buy one.įrom what I found Forester's have a great maintenance record including the CVT and they are always near the top of holding their resale value over time. I'm not arguing for CVT's, I don't know enough about them. But other than that the only reason I get from haters is "I only drive sticks so I will never buy a CVT." I do understand that a CVT is mechanically more complicated than a traditional auto transmission which means higher maint. But when asked why they never have a FACTUAL reason. I'm looking at the 2019 Foresters and seems everywhere I research people always say they hate the CVT.
